Kindergarten and Child Care Centre Incursions

Teaching Children to Grow
The Sage Garden is now introducing an exciting new series of garden incursions designed specifically for Kindergartens and Child Care Centres. Our incursions aim to bring the joys of gardening to children in the early years and to nurture a sense of wonder, excitement and empowerment through growing food that is healthy for us, in a way that is healthy and sustainable for our environment.

What We Do

The Sage Garden will provide activities tailored to the specific needs of the individual Kindergartens/Child Care Centres. These include but are not limited to:

One hour gardening sessions - learning through story, song and practical gardening activities:
* Reading a gardening story
*
Planting an edible seed to take home,
with a letter from the seed to the child and family explaining who it is and what it will need to help it grow
* Decorating a seed carry bag (so the soil wont spill on the way home!)
* Learning a series of actions, rhymes and songs

Rotational one hour gardening session - three garden stations with the support of the teachers:
* Planting an edible seed to take home, with a letter from the seed to the child and family explaining who it is and what it will need to help it grow
* Decorating a seed carry bag (so the soil wont spill on the way home!)
* Planting and discussing seasonal fruit, vegetables and herbs

Establishing a garden bed. This is dependant on the individual needs and requirements of the Kindergarten / Child Care Centre and can include:
* The supply and delivery of all materials (soil, mulch, seedlings, seeds)
*
The construction and planting of the garden beds (working with existing garden beds or with our own custom built and painted garden collars)

* A one hour gardening session with the children where they will scatter seeds, and water and mulch the new garden beds. They will also discuss what has been planted and how the garden will grow.
* Follow-up and further education one month after the initial planting. At the request of each centre The Sage Garden can return seasonally to maintain the garden and continue to run garden sessions with the children.

The ever-changing nature of gardening keeps children intrigued and excited about being a part of the growing experience – it is an activity which can last a lifetime.
